Praise means Progress – Week 2

Little boy playing with feeding tube

Clarissa has explained I am everything to Mike and he will do anything for my attention. Our plan is to teach him, if he eats and communicates with me, then he gets Mummy. Just over a week in to the process and he is already torn at mealtimes, does he resort to old ways and eat nothing or do what Mum says and get her gushing with attention, all for him? The answer is eventually, always the latter! (However long that might take!) This is where we are working with Mike right now. Mike needs to learn that crying is for babies, communicating for toddlers: wish me luck…

We’ve introduced fromage frais , on a spoon in to Mike’s diet today. He will play and touch it, with his tongue but I haven’t been able to spoon feed him in nearly a year. (For a long time, Michael has been unable to accept a spoon, or a mouthful of food.) On the second mouthful, he began to wretch, I began to praise and wow, he swallowed! A huge, huge milestone and not something I was expecting so soon in to the process.

The ‘wow’ doesn’t stop there though! Michael is now eating a consistent diet and finishing all the food I offer him. We haven’t introduced new food yet to his diet, it’s still all his snack but we have established consistency, proved in him maintaining his weight even though he is now off his NG tube. Hooray!
